Obscured GPS data from a photo I took with an iPhone 5, viewed using Windows 7
An earlier post by !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! drew some concern from others regarding posting photos and sharing GPS location data on Oppo. If you weren’t aware, many connected devices, such as a smartphone, will save the GPS location that every picture was taken. This information is saved with the picture, and can be viewed by anyone who the photo is sent/shared.
At one point, it was rumored that Kinja removed some of this data when a photo was uploaded to their servers. However, a quick test proved otherwise - at least in my case...
I turned Location Services on briefly for one photo, then uploaded it to a draft in Kinja... the GPS data was still there.
The best course of action is to disable Location Services (
or whatever your device calls it
) for your camera. In fact, it is wise to disable Location Services for everything on your device that doesn’t NEED Location Services for proper operation.

Yep. Turning off location tagging was the first thing I did when I got all my smart phones

I disagree. Geotagging is great, and I want it on every picture I take. I don’t want that info to show up on kinja though, and while I would hope it would strip that data, I’ve never trusted it to do so, and so anytime I post any of my own pictures I strip it manually in Windows:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Then upload the copy, which no longer has the geo information embedded.
Also back when it worked, I’d just open in mspaint, select all, and copy/paste which means only sending the pixel data with no metadata, but that’s been broken for a few weeks for me.

That’s a fair point, and this is a good method for people who want to use Geotagging while keeping that data off the internet.

I always turn my location off now. Plus it drains the battery a lot faster too. I generally turn my wifi off when I leave my house too, and I only use bluetooth if I am in one of the cars. You should leave your bluetooth, wifi, and gps location turned off, and your battery life will improve.

Thanks for the tip; I guess you guys can figure out where I live based on my food and beer photos.

Bluetooth barely drains battery, not sure about the others. GPS most likely does.

The only location service I enable is for GPS when in use. I’ll have to consider the Wifi tip; I’m always looking for ways to improve battery life.

There needs to be an app for this... Do screen caps on a smartphone store location information? If not, I guess that’d be a way around it.
I just live without geotagging because of privacy concerns.

I have location on for a few apps for directions / maps, but I have it turned off on my camera!
